What is a birth doula?

A birth doula is a trained professional who provides continuous support before, during and after childbirth. To support care offered by clinical providers, a doula focuses entirely on your comfort, confidence and well-being.

During pregnancy, your doula helps you prepare for birth and understand your options. In labor, the doula stays by your side, offering reassurance and comfort measures. After delivery, your doula supports you through those important first hours of recovery and bonding with your baby.

  • Education and guidance
    • Your doula helps you understand your choices, so you can make informed decisions that align with your birth preferences.
  • Advocacy
    • Your doula ensures your voice is heard, helping you communicate your wishes clearly to your care team.
  • Postpartum support
    • In the hours after birth, your doula provides reassurance, comfort and early guidance as you begin life with your new baby.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the difference between a doula and a nurse?

A nurse provides clinical care, such as monitoring your health and your baby's well-being during labor. A doula provides continuous emotional and physical support, focusing on your comfort and confidence. The two roles work together to support you.

Can I have a doula and an epidural?

Yes. A doula supports you no matter how you choose to give birth. If you have an epidural, your doula continues to offer comfort, reassurance and guidance throughout your labor.

Can a doula support a cesarean birth?

Yes. A doula can provide emotional support and comfort before, during and after a cesarean birth, helping you feel calm and informed throughout the experience.

Does a doula replace my provider or support person?

No. A doula works alongside your medical provider and your partner or support person. Rather than replacing anyone, your doula adds an extra layer of dedicated support to your birth team.
