Welcome from Program Director
Thank you for your interest in the PGY1 pharmacy residency program at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital. Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital is a 288-bed, rural academic medical center located in northeastern Pennsylvania, serving as the main tertiary care center for the Guthrie Health System. Beyond the hospital’s halls, however, you find so much more than that. You find a unique, welcoming learning environment with learners at various stages of training across a broad range of specialties that fosters the growth of medical professionals. I say this with confidence because this environment has fostered my own growth from pharmacy intern to pharmacist, clinical specialist in critical care, and Residency Program Director. Such is the case for many of our preceptors who have grown professionally within this environment, including many of our past residents who have joined our team of pharmacists, preceptors, and leaders.
PGY1 pharmacy residents at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital take on the role of clinical pharmacy specialists, providing care to patients in a variety of patient care settings under the guidance of skilled preceptors, including faculty from Binghamton University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. We aim to provide a unique and broad experience that puts you, the resident, in the center of your own learning journey. We will help you to customize a learning experience that aligns with your career goals and challenges you to reach your maximum potential.
With perks such as self-scheduling, the ability to select days off in recognition of weekend staffing requirements, and scheduled, uninterrupted time for resident well-being, we aim to balance the intensity of residency training with a genuine focus on resident well-being and the things you value to support it. Additionally, residents will have access to parental and family paid leave options, free membership to an on-site gym, free and confidential access to counseling services through Guthrie’s Thrive Wellbeing program, easy access to a program ombudsman, and well-being coupons for things you value such as extra sleep, extra project time, appointment time, ‘skip a journal club’, and more.
Upon completion of the residency program, graduates will be prepared to pursue PGY2 training or enter diverse interdisciplinary pharmacy practice environments with the confidence, advanced clinical competence, leadership abilities, and professional skills needed to provide high-quality patient care and advance the pharmacy profession.
We appreciate your interest in our program and welcome any additional questions we may be able to answer for you.
