Introducing the TAMBE Procedure at Guthrie
At Guthrie, we are proud to be the first in our region to offer the groundbreaking Thoracoabdominal Branch Endoprosthesis (TAMBE) procedure. This innovative treatment provides a minimally invasive solution for complex aortic aneurysms, reinforcing our commitment to bringing the most advanced vascular care to our community.
What is the TAMBE Procedure?
The TAMBE procedure is a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive endovascular treatment for complex abdominal aortic aneurysms involving the visceral segment—including thoracoabdominal, suprarenal, and pararenal aneurysms. These serious conditions occur when the wall of the aorta—the body’s largest artery—weakens and bulges, particularly along the section that spans from the chest to the abdomen. If left untreated, these aneurysms pose a high risk of rupture, which can be fatal, and may also compromise blood flow to critical organs such as the kidneys, liver, and intestines.
Approved by the FDA in 2023, the GORE® EXCLUDER® Thoracoabdominal Branch Endoprosthesis (TAMBE) is a multibranch stent graft designed specifically to treat these high-risk aneurysms. Unlike traditional open surgery—which involves large incisions, prolonged hospital stays, and significant surgical risk—the TAMBE procedure is performed through small groin incisions using a minimally invasive technique. With the aid of real-time imaging, the device is precisely guided through the blood vessels and deployed at the site of the aneurysm, sealing the weakened area while preserving blood flow to vital visceral arteries.
Benefits of the TAMBE Procedure
TAMBE represents a significant advancement over conventional surgical techniques, offering several patient-centered benefits:
- Reduced Risk: Lower complication rates compared to open surgery, especially in high-risk patients.
- Minimally Invasive Endovascular Approach: Performed through small incisions in the groin, eliminating the need for large, open abdominal or chest surgery.
- Faster Recovery: Patients typically experience shorter hospital stays and quicker return to normal activities.
- Off-The-Shelf Availability: The TAMBE device is pre-manufactured to fit a wide range of anatomies, allowing for timely intervention without waiting for custom-built devices.
- Organ Preservation: Designed to preserve blood flow to vital organs such as the kidneys, liver, and intestines, improving overall safety and long-term outcomes.
