Babies born at Guthrie Corning Hospital and Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in February received a special gift from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) in the form of handmade red hats. The hats are given out to honor Heart Month in February.
The AHA/ASA collected these red hats, which were knitted and crocheted by local volunteers and crafters and provided them to the hospitals through the Little Hats, Big Hearts program. The goal is to empower moms to live heart healthy lives and to help their children do the same. In addition to the hats, parents received important heart health information.
The hats serve as a reminder that heart disease is the number one killer of Americans. Congenital heart defects are the most common type of birth defect in the country. This marks the second year of the Little Hats, Big Hearts program in the Southern Tier.
The Little Hats, Big Hearts program is presented in connection with The Children’s Heart Foundation.
