Stanley Conklin Research Day

Residents and medical students at Guthrie participated in the second Stanley Conklin Research Day on Friday, April 5. The event showcased research projects currently underway, and included oral and poster presentations. These were judged by a panel of current and past Guthrie physicians and awards were given in a number of categories.

3rd Place Winner of the Foundation of the National Lipid Association (FNLA) Young Investigator Award

Dr. HammadDr. Rahman’s abstract submission “Effects of Marine Omega-3 Fatty Acids on Cardiovascular Outcomes in Patients with Ischemic Heart Disease: A Meta-Analysis” was chosen as the 3rd place winner of the FNLA Young Investigator Award. As the winner of this award, he will be recognized at the NLA/SELA Business Meeting. Dr. Rahman will also be presenting another abstract, “Meta-Analysis of Effects of Triglyceride Modifiers on Cardiovascular Outcomes” at the 2019 National Lipid Association Scientific Sessions May 16 – 19 in Miami, FL.

On March 29, 2019 Dr. TsuJung Yang and Dr. Subash Ghimire both presented their Quality Improvement projects for Medical Grand Rounds. Dr. Yang’s project, “Hepatitis C Screening in Baby Boomers” was presented at the 2018 American College of Gastroenterology Conference. Dr. Ghimire’s project, “Screening of Anxiety and Depressive Symptoms using Standardized Screening Tools in Oncological Patients: QI Project” was presented at the 2018 Summit on National and Global Health Disparities and published in Anticancer Research in September 2018.

New Associate Program Director

Dr. James Walsh has been appointed the role Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency on December 20, 2018. Dr. Walsh has had a distinguished career at Guthrie. Dr. Walsh served as Chief of the Section of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine since 1998. He has been a great clinician and educator for the Internal Medicine residents, winning the Faculty Teacher of the Year award six times. Dr. Walsh is also the Regional Assistant Dean at the Guthrie Campus of the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine.

New Program Director:

Dr. Sheela Prabhu has assumed the role of Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Robert Packer Hospital on August 9, 2018. She succeeds Dr. Mathew Novak who served in the role for two years.

Dr. Prabhu began her academic training at Mangalore University where she received a bachelor of science degree and later attended Mysore Medical College where she obtained her MBBS in 1998. She completed her internal medicine residency at Guthrie/Robert Packer Hospital and her fellowship training was completed in geriatrics at Oregon Health & Science University. She began her career at Guthrie in 2004 and has held various leadership appointments as Section Chief, Department of Internal Medicine and the Lead Medical Physician for PROME Clinic. Most importantly, she has served as Core Faculty within the Internal Medicine residency since 2006 and more recently Associate Program Director.

Dr. Prabhu’s commitment to education will enhance the learning environment within the current Internal Medicine Residency as well as contribute to our strategic plan as we grow the total number of training programs within Guthrie.

The Dr. Robert E. Cohen Professionalism Award is presented to a resident or fellow who exemplifies professionalism and excellence in all aspects of patient care and interactions with staff and colleagues. Dr. Cohen, a former orthopaedic surgeon at Guthrie, noted the incredibly high caliber of the candidates nominated this year by peers, attendings and fellow staff members.

The recipient of this year's award is Dr. Zach Wolfe, Chief Resident, Internal Medicine Residency. Dr. Wolfe will begin a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at Lehigh Valley Health Network following graduation in June.

Dr. WolfeGuthrie is pleased to announce that Dr. Zachary Wolfe, 3rd Year Chief Resident in the Internal Medicine Residency program at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital, recently received the Pennsylvania American College of Physicians Professionalism Award. This award is presented annually to Pennsylvania medical residents determined to best exemplify leadership, compassion and integrity. David George, MD, FACP, MD, Governor of the ACP PA Eastern Chapter, expressed thanks to Dr. Wolfe for what he brings to his patients and colleagues each day. "Thanks for being such a great role model for others.” Dr. Wolfe was nominated by the Internal Medicine faculty for the award in recognition of the professionalism and teamwork he helps bring to the residency program. On Nov. 2 the Office of Continuing Medical Education & Internal Medicine Residency hosted Dr. Allen Caruthers Steere, who serves as Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Director of Translational Research in Rheumatology at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he studies Lyme disease and rheumatoid arthritis.

Dr. Steere started his day with the Internal Medicine and Family Medicine Residents where a case presentation was given by Dr. Zachary Wolfe, 3rd Year Chief, Internal Medicine Resident. A Q&A session was also held during this time. Later that evening Dr. Steere presented an informative presentation on “Lyme Disease”, at The Club at Shepard Hills.

2017 Stanley Conklin Award Winners from the Internal Medicine Residency

Dr. Stanley Conklin first joined the Guthrie Clinic in 1920 and specialized in Endocrinology and was Chairman of the Department of Medicine for many years. During his time with the Guthrie Clinic, he was very interested in the interns and residents and was devoted to medical education and the medical library. These interests continued even after his retirement in 1973. The Stanley Conklin Awards originated from a monetary donation from one of his grateful patients. Internal Medicine residents won eight out of nine awards given. Congratulations on your dedication to scholarly activity!
