The Family Medicine clerkship and elective opportunity immerses medical students in the specialty, putting them in the shoes of a family physician. Students see outpatients in the clinic with Guthrie Family Medicine residents and faculty mentors, and see family medicine outpatients in an innovative student-run clinic. Medical students perform the evaluation and precept the encounter with a dedicated family medicine faculty preceptor.
In addition, medical students will round in the hospital with the family medicine residents and faculty. Medical students will also attend morning and noon didactic lectures and the weekly afternoon educational offerings, varying between chronic disease management, individual reflection and wellness, and clinical procedure skills such as suturing or skin biopsies.
Osteopathic medical students will also attend afternoon skills sessions once a week and see OMT patients with members of the DO faculty. A dedicated OMT elective rotation is also available, with DO faculty members on staff.
All medical student rotations at Guthrie are coordinated through Kyle Williams, Student Affairs Coordinator, Office of Medical Education, firstname.lastname@example.org.
