Early Screening for Vascular Disease

Screenings can help detect conditions before they are urgent health issues. You can have one procedure to screen for three vascular diseases including: Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, Carotid Artery Disease and Peripheral Artery Disease. Vascular diseases cause problems with blood flow in your body. This screening can help detect conditions before they are urgent health issues.

Vascular screenings are offered weekdays at Guthrie Sayre. Call 570-887-2893 or 570-887-2894 to schedule an appointment.

We offer this combined vascular screening at a discounted price of $99.

We do not submit claims for vascular screening to health insurance plans. You may wish to contact your carrier for coverage information. You will be asked to pay at the time of service.

Screening for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)

An aneurysm is an enlarged area in a blood vessel. AAA affects the aorta, the artery that carries blood and oxygen to the body. If this area ruptures, the bleeding that results can be life-threatening.

You should consider this screening if you are:

  • Male over age 60
  • Female over age 60 with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes or heart disease
  • Male or female over age 50 with a family history of AAA
  • Male or female current or former smoker over age 50

Screening for Carotid Artery Disease (CAD)

Carotid Artery Disease is a narrowing of one or both arteries in the neck. These are the main blood vessels carrying blood from the heart to the brain. CAD increases your risk of stroke.

You should consider this screening if you are:

  • Family history of stroke
  • Diabetic
  • Current or former smoker
  • Over age 40 with high cholesterol
  • Blockages in the arteries in your legs

Screening for Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)

Peripheral Artery Disease is a narrowing of arteries that supply blood and oxygen to the legs, stomach, arms and head. The disease occurs most frequently in the legs and can lead to leg pain when walking.

You should consider this screening if you are:

  • A smoker over age 35
  • Over age 40 with high cholesterol or high blood pressure
  • Diabetic
  • Over age 40 with a family history of PAD
  • Experiencing difficulty walking, cramps, numbness or other changes in your legs

What happens during screening?

Vascular screening is fast and non-invasive. Our technician will place blood pressure cuffs on your arms and legs and use ultrasound to see how well the blood is flowing in your legs, abdomen and neck. The screening lasts approximately 30 minutes.

What if the screening shows a problem?

If screening shows an issue, you will be referred to a vascular surgeon for follow-up, which may include further testing.  If the screening reveals an urgent issue, our vascular surgeons are on-site to take immediate action.

Treatment for vascular disease includes lifestyle changes, such as exercise or quitting smoking, medications and surgery. Your physician will work with you to determine the best course of treatment.
