Guthrie is pleased to announce that Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital has been named a Blue Distinction Center+ for Maternity Care by Highmark. This is the first time the hospital has received this accreditation.
Michael Scalzone, MD, Executive Vice President of the Guthrie Medical Group and Chairman of OB/GYN said: “We are incredibly proud to receive this national distinction which recognizes the high quality care provided by the hospital. Working in obstetrics requires a very special team – our patients come to us at one of the most emotional times of their lives. Our nursing staff and providers in the First Impressions Birthing Center at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital provide excellent care to our patients, and this recognition is a testament to their skills and commitment to support new mothers and their families.”
Blue Distinction Centers are nationally designated healthcare facilities shown to deliver improved patient safety and better health outcomes, based on objective measures that were developed with input from the medical community. The Maternity Care designation is a new designation under the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program, and evaluates hospitals on several quality measures, including the percentage of newborns that fall into the category of early elective delivery, an ongoing concern in the medical community.
Hospitals that receive a Blue Distinction Center+ for Maternity Care designation meet requirements that support evidence-based practices of care. They have also initiated programs to promote successful breastfeeding, as described in the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative by Baby-Friendly USA or the Mother-Friendly Hospital Program’s “Ten Steps of Mother-Friendly Care” by the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS). The Maternity Care program also evaluates hospitals on overall patient satisfaction, including a willingness to recommend the hospital to others. To receive a Blue Distinction Centers+ for Maternity Care designation, a hospital must also meet requirements for cost efficiency.
