New Guthrie Program Focuses on Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Care
Patients struggling with the effects of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) have a new resource to seek treatment. Guthrie is proud to announce a new multidisciplinary clinic in the diagnosis and treatment of TOS.
The thoracic outlet is the space in the body between the collarbone and the uppermost (first) rib of the chest cavity. TOS can be caused by a number of factors and is often difficult to pinpoint. Symptoms can vary from pain, numbness or tingling in the neck, shoulder, arm or hand; swelling, heaviness or discoloration of the arm; visible veins near the shoulder or chest; pain or fatigue with arm use; a weak or absent pulse in the arm; and others.
The new clinic combines expertise in surgery, orthopedics, neurology, sports medicine and occupational therapy.
“Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is a complex condition that can be difficult to diagnose due to the variety of potential causes and symptoms,” said John Sadeghi, MD, Cardiothoracic Surgery. “That’s why the new TOS clinic brings together this mix of specialists: to make sure each patient receives the nuanced evaluation and individualized treatment plan that’s right for them.”
Treatment options for TOS depend on the specific structures being impacted in the thoracic outlet, the severity of conditions being experienced and individual health history. The majority of TOS patients begin with physical or occupational therapy, and many experience significant improvement without needing surgical intervention.
Minimally invasive, robotic surgery is considered only when conservative treatment has not provided adequate relief and when the patient meets appropriate clinical criteria.
