Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital has been named a Blue Distinction Center ® for its gastric banding program and a Blue Distinction Center + SM for its gastric stapling program by Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania (BCNEPA).
Joshua Alley, MD, Guthrie Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery, said: “The Guthrie Weight Loss Center at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital is delighted to receive this national distinction. Thanks to our committed team of weight loss specialists, we are able to deliver the highest quality of care to our bariatric patients. We recognize that every patient has individual needs in their journey to achieve a healthy weight, and we are proud of our ability to offer patient-centered care every time.”
Programs cited as Blue Distinction Centers® have met nationally established quality care and outcomes criteria for bariatric surgery that have been developed with input from the medical community.
Blue Distinction Centers+ programs are medical facilities with demonstrated expertise and a commitment to quality care in the area of bariatric surgery and have additionally met cost measures that address consumers’ needs for affordable health care.
“Our goal with the Blue Distinction Centers+ for Specialty CareSM program is to identify regional medical facilities that deliver higher overall quality and positive patient outcomes for a specific area of specialty care, such as bariatric surgery,” said Nina M. Taggart, MD, Vice President of Clinical Operations and Chief Medical Officer for BCNEPA. “This helps our members, and all local residents, make more informed healthcare decisions.”
Research confirms that Blue Distinction Centers+ demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients, with lower rates of complications and readmissions than their peers. Blue Distinction Centers+ are also 20 percent more cost-efficient than non-Blue Distinction Center facilities.
The Guthrie Weight Loss Center offers both surgical and non-surgical medical weight loss programs. Guthrie has been accredited as a Level 1 facility by the Bariatric Surgery Center Network (BSCN) Accreditation Program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Weight loss surgery (also known as metabolic or bariatric surgery) is a proven method for reducing weight and improving health in patients with clinically severe obesity. Bariatric surgery can also reduce or eliminate many obesity-related chronic diseases.
Since 2006, consumers, medical providers and employers have relied on the Blue Distinction program to identify hospitals delivering quality care in Bariatric Surgery, Cardiac Care, Complex and Rare Cancers, Knee and Hip Replacements, Spine Surgery, and Transplants.
