What to Expect with Joint Replacement

An artificial joint lasts about 15 to 20 years, depending on your activity level. If the new joint allows you to return to activities that place stress on the joint (running, tennis, etc.) and you are fairly young at the time of joint replacement, a second joint replacement may become necessary later in your life.

You can expect to have some immediate pain after your joint is replaced, with pain lasting up to two weeks after surgery. Once the initial pain from surgery decreases, you should also notice a significant improvement with your joint. As healing progresses you will continue to meet improvement milestones with overall recovery lasting about two months.

If you require more than one joint replacement, it’s preferable to replace one at a time. However, we might choose to replace more than one at the same time, depending on your individual needs.

Advanced Knee and Hip Replacement Surgery at Guthrie

We now offer the option of anterior hip replacements for patients in Corning N.Y., and Sayre, Pa. The anterior approach procedure allows your surgeon to work between the muscles and tendons, which helps you heal faster with less pain and long-term results. Most patients who choose the anterior approach are discharged from the hospital sooner (most discharges are same or next day), have fewer activity restrictions after surgery, and experience faster recovery.

Guthrie is a leader in joint replacement and offers Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery for:
