Pennsylvania House leaders today learned why telemedicine is playing a pivotal role in expanding access to health care.
Rep. Mark Mustio, chairman of the House Professional Licensure Committee and Rep. Tina Pickett, chairman of the House Insurance Committee met with leaders at Guthrie to learn about telemedicine, which enables health care professionals to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients using telecommunications technology. During a demonstration of Guthrie Now, Reps. Mustio and Pickett were able to see how patients in rural or remote locations can access medical expertise quickly and efficiently.
Guthrie President and CEO, Dr. Joseph Scopelliti said, “Guthrie is proud to provide excellent care to patients across Guthrie’s service area, including many living in rural communities. Telemedicine allows us to expand access to primary and specialty care in our patients’ homes or local primary care offices. We are pleased to work with our lawmakers to ensure patients can access technology-based care throughout our service area.”
Pennsylvania State Representative, Tina Picket said, “I am honored to be part of the conversation about the needs of rural Pennsylvanians related to health care access. Telemedicine programs are the new physician house call – allowing patients to access health care without the need to travel long distances. I am excited to learn about the possibilities this technology could hold for constituents in rural and underserved areas.”
The visit from Reps. Mustio and Pickett comes after the Pennsylvania Senate approved in June legislation promoting telemedicine in Pennsylvania as a way to overcome barriers to quality patient care.
