Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital Reaccredited as a Level 1 Trauma Center

October 9, 2026

Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital has been reaccredited as a Level I Trauma Center by the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation (PTSF) for a full three-year accreditation period, effective Oct. 1, 2026, through Sept. 30, 2029.

Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital first achieved Level I Trauma Center accreditation in 2023, becoming the only Level I Trauma Center in Guthrie's service area. The reaccreditation reaffirms the hospital's commitment to providing the highest level of trauma care to patients across northern Pennsylvania and the Southern Tier of New York.

As a Level I Trauma Center, Robert Packer Hospital meets rigorous standards for patient care, research, education and continuous quality improvement while providing comprehensive, around-the-clock trauma services.

"Access to advanced trauma care can make the difference between life and death," said Dr. Edmund Sabanegh, President and CEO of The Guthrie Clinic. "Data shows fewer than 20% of Level I trauma centers are located in rural communities, yet patients with trauma-center access times exceeding 60 minutes experience mortality rates approximately 36% higher than those with access times under 15 minutes. Maintaining a Level I Trauma Center helps ensure patients across our rural region have access to lifesaving care close to home when every minute matters."

The reaccreditation reflects the efforts of a multidisciplinary team of trauma surgeons, physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, emergency medical services partners, rehabilitation specialists and support staff who work together to deliver comprehensive trauma care every day.

The designation also highlights the strength of Guthrie's regional trauma network. Guthrie's coordinated system helps ensure patients throughout northern Pennsylvania and the Southern Tier of New York have access to coordinated trauma services and advanced care when needed.

"This achievement is a testament to the dedication, expertise and teamwork of our caregivers across the system," said Dr. Sabanegh. "Their commitment ensures that patients experiencing traumatic injuries receive exceptional care when every second counts."
