Guthrie CEO Named To 100 Physician Leaders of Hospitals and Health Systems

Sayre, Pa. – Guthrie President and CEO Joseph Scopelliti, MD, has been named to Becker's Hospital Review’s list of 100 Physician Leaders of Hospitals and Health Systems, which features some of the top physician leaders in healthcare.

Physician leaders are selected for inclusion based on their healthcare experience, awards they've received and their commitment to quality care. Many of the leaders were nominated by their peers, and the list was vetted by industry experts. Hospital and health system leaders do not pay and cannot pay to be included on this list.

Dr. Scopelliti became sole CEO of Guthrie in March of this year, beginning a new phase of integration for the Guthrie system. Prior to this, Dr. Scopelliti was the President/CEO of the Guthrie Clinic and Co-CEO Medical Affairs Guthrie Health since November, 2005. He had also served as the Executive Vice President of Clinic Affairs since 1994. 

He has served as a practicing gastroenterologist at the Guthrie Clinic and as a Clinical Instructor with the State University of New York Upstate Medical University at Syracuse, New York since 1984. Since 2005, he has also been associated with the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York, as an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine. 

Dr. Scopelliti is a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine in the Subspecialty of Gastroenterology and the National Board of Medical Examiners.  A published researcher, he has served as Medical Director of both Guthrie Clinic and Robert Packer Hospital as well as Vice President of Medical Affairs for the Clinic, Chairman of the Clinic Management Team, and Chairman of the Graduate Medical Education Committee, a position he assumed in 1999 and maintains to date.

Guthrie Health is a community-based, not-for-profit health care system jointly formed by Guthrie Healthcare System (GHS) and Guthrie Clinic, also not-for-profit health care organizations. GHS provides inpatient, outpatient and home-based services through Corning Hospital, Troy Community Hospital, Robert Packer Hospital, and Guthrie Home Care and Guthrie Hospice. Guthrie Clinic provides primary and specialty physician services at 25 regional clinics. Guthrie Health provides care for 200,000 patients annually within its eleven-county service area across the northern tier of Pennsylvania and the southern tier of New York.
