Guthrie Cancer Center Celebrates 80 Years of Accreditation

This year, Guthrie Cancer Center celebrates 80 years of accreditation by the Commission on Cancer (CoC). The CoC Accreditation Program provides the framework for Guthrie to improve its quality of patient care and ensures that key elements of quality cancer care are provided to each person treated within Guthrie’s cancer program.

Philip Lowry, M.D., chief, hematology/oncology; co-director, Guthrie Cancer Center – Sayre, said, “This accreditation reflects the excellent cancer care our staff strives to provide to every patient, every time. I could not be prouder of the continuous effort by our cancer team to deliver the best patient-centered care possible.”

To earn voluntary CoC accreditation, a cancer program must meet 34 CoC quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care.

CoC-accredited facilities diagnose and/or treat more than 70 percent of all newly diagnosed patients with cancer.
