How to Apply

Application Process:
Guthrie processes resident applications through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service). Visit www.aamc.org/students/eras/. The application due date is variable annually and can be found on the ERAS site. “Match Day” is in mid-March each year. For more information contact the program's coordinator.

Our program will be participating in the ADA's Council of Orthopaedic Residency Directors (CORD) universal interview offer day.

All communication, including interview scheduling, will be done through ERAS scheduler e-mail.  Preference will be given to candidates who have some clinical experience in the Guthrie system.

Resident Selection Criteria:

Orthopaedic surgery residency selection is highly competitive. In the selection of residents, equal consideration is given to all applicants regardless of race, gender, and/or culture. The following is a list of minimum requirements for applicants:

  • Passing scores of greater than 225 on USMLE Step 1 and Step 2, with Step 2 CS completion preferred, but exceptional performance on COMLEX will be considered.  Performance on standardized testing is highly correlated with passing the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) exam and therefore is heavily weighted in resident selection.
  • Passing score on all NBME shelf exams or equivalent assessment, with preference to those applicants who demonstrate outstanding performance on surgical shelf exams and clinical rotations.
  • Three letters of recommendation, including two within the field of orthopaedic surgery.
  • Research experience is preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with team members, and interact positively with other members of the health care team, administration, patients, and family members.
  • Graduation from a U.S. or Canadian medical school within three years or less is desired, but consideration may be given to superior candidates who have received advanced post-graduate degree/training or ECFMG-certified foreign medical graduates.
    • In those cases, our institution sponsors J-1 visas only. If you are considering an H1-B, you must have proof of passing USMLE Step III, and this must be approved by Guthrie's Department of Medical Education.
