Undergrad School: West China School of Medicine of Sichuan University, Chengdu, China
Medical School: Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA
What drew me to General Surgery: I've always had a keen eye for artistic composition and aesthetics. Playing the clarinet for 20 years in various orchestras and dabbling in the saxophone and piano have honed my dexterity. To me, surgery is the art of clean lines and methodical elegance. Although I am committed to a career in radiology, I deeply value the dynamics of teamwork and leadership of surgery, and I believe that preliminary year in surgery will make me well-equipped for my future career.
What do I like to do in my free time: I love spending time with my 8 month old daughter, playing the clarinet in an orchestra or with friends in our Irish music band, and of course, binge watching Netflix!

O'BrienBrandon O'Brien, DO

Hometown: Binghamton, NY
Undergrad School: St. Bonaventure University
Medical School: Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) - Erie
What drew me to General Surgery: During medical school I was able to experience the passion that each attending physician had for their respective specialty.  I found that kind of passion in myself during my Surgery rotations. Surgeons have the incredible opportunity to give back to their patients a quality of life that they lost or never had, while also providing the kind of compassionate care that will leave everlasting impressions on both our patients and ourselves.
What do I like to do in my free time: Spending time with my family, enjoying the outdoors, exercising on the Peloton, playing disc golf, and spending time on the water.

SenapathiSri Harsha Vardhan Senapathi, MD

Hometown: Visakhapatnam
Undergrad School: Columbus University College of Medicine and Health Sciences
Medical School: Columbus University College of Medicine and Health Sciences
What drew me to General Surgery: Growing up, I always wondered how surgeries were performed, so instead of continuing my wondering I became determined to find my way into the operating room (professionally, not as a patient...). One aspect of surgery that that particularly attracts me to the specialty is how surgeries are performed in an orderly fashion following a protocol but also require on the spot decisions from operating staff when things do not go accordingly.
What do I like to do in my free time: I like to travel, try new cuisines, watch sunsets, learn about wildlife, and relax on the sand by the beach.

What drew me to General Surgery: What drew me most to general surgery was the broad spectrum of opportunities it could provide to me as a resident and physician. It allows me to learn to be a healer with my hands in the OR while simultaneously teaching me to provide the best holistic and well-rounded care to my patients. To have the opportunity to learn to integrate many areas of medicine into one specialty, as a general surgery resident, I know will best serve my current patients and America's servicemen and women who I will eventually serve as a physician in the Air Force Medical Corps.

What drew me to General Surgery: What motivates me in medicine and surgery is impact. Surgery grants the opportunity to serve patients in one of their most vulnerable moments, to enhance their life in a meaningful way – a way that blends the principles of basic biomedical sciences into interpersonal interactions and transformative procedures. I value the high expectations surgeons have held me to over the years to bring out my best and deliver excellent patient care outcomes consistently when the stakes are high. I believe these expectations of surgeons are signs of the field’s deep investment in the personal and professional growth of the next generation – a legacy of impact I am honored to contribute to.

Bertram_CeydaCeyda Bertram, MD

Hometown: Rockford, IL
Undergrad School: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Medical School: Albany Medical College
What drew me to General Surgery: Most people look up at the sky and ponder how there are billions of stars encircled by planets that make solar systems, that make up galaxies that are all within a vast universe. They are looking too far. I look at the human body. Trillions of cells of various types are woven together in different patterns of tissue that look very different from each other yet live in harmony without falling apart. In surgery, I can see the masterpiece at work from the inside and the outside, experience the macroscopic, and still treat the microscopic.
What do I like to do in my free time: Rock climbing, playing my keyboard, gathering friends for a night of board games, and trying various cuisines.

What drew me to General Surgery: Surgery was my first clinical rotation of medical school, and it was love at first sight. I enjoyed the camaraderie in the operating room and the importance of the surgical team. I have profound respect and appreciate the immediate effect surgery can have on the lives of our patients and their families. I have personally experienced the benefits of a successful surgical outcome but seeing the gratitude of others really stood out to me.
What do I like to do in my free time: Growing up in rural Oregon, I loved the outdoors and running. I traded the pacific northwest for the beaches of sunny Florida when I went away for college. Recently, I have attempted to watch all the SpaceX and NASA rocket launches from Cape Canaveral. I also enjoy new technology and have built my computer to play formula 1 racing simulations and Oculus virtual reality. However, most of my free time at home is spent with family. I love spending time with my wife and newborn son. We are looking forward to exploring the outdoors and the snow while at Guthrie.
