Located in the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania, near the state border with New York, Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital offers a unique learning environment for our Anesthesiology residents. The emergency department is open 24 hours, seven days a week, for assessment and treatment of injuries and illnesses. As a Level II accredited Trauma Center, the hospital serves an area spanning a 100-mile radius. It hosts two helipads to allow for the swift facilitation and transfer of critically ill patients to our care. Additionally, we serve patients from all area hospitals, including Guthrie Corning Hospital, Guthrie Cortland Medical Center, Guthrie Towanda Memorial Hospital, and Guthrie Troy Community Hospital.

Guthrie patients come from a varied mix of urban and rural locations that include the cities of Elmira, Corning, Ithaca and Binghamton, New York, as well as scenic areas such as the Finger Lakes and the Endless Mountains. As a predominantly rural area, the region hosts many working farms and is famed for its outdoor pursuits, including mountain biking, hiking, and kayaking.

Residents at the hospital can participate in a diverse and complex variety of cases, and our teaching model encourages one-on-one training with our expert faculty physicians. Our program offers residents unlimited experiences to help them face anesthetic challenges, including decision making with faculty, perioperative consultation and exposure to various hands-on skills -- all to ensure a competent physician anesthesiologist at the end of our residency program.

As well as working hand in hand with our surgical services teams, our Anesthesiology residents will work in conjunction with a wide range of additional specialties including:

  • Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery
  • Interventional Pain Medicine
  • Critical Care Medicine
  • Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine
  • Bariatric Surgery
  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Geriatric Medicine
  • Urogynecology and Obstetrics
  • Plastic Reconstructive Surgery
