Sayre, Pa. – Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital has been named a Blue Distinction Center+ for Cardiac CareSM by Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania (BCNEPA).
“The Guthrie Cardiac and Vascular Center at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital is proud to have earned this national distinction. Thanks to our committed team of cardiac and vascular specialists we are able to deliver on Guthrie’s mission to provide the highest quality care possible to our patients,” said Dr. Daniel Sporn, Guthrie’s Chief of Cardiology.
Blue Distinction Centers+ for Cardiac Care are medical facilities with demonstrated expertise and a commitment to quality care, resulting in better overall outcomes for patients requiring inpatient cardiac care services, including cardiac rehabilitation, cardiac catheterization and cardiac surgery.
“The goal of the team of experts at the Guthrie Cardiac and Vascular Center is to provide advanced clinical care to our patients so they can enjoy the best possible outcomes and live longer, healthier lives,” said Sporn. “As a Blue Distinction Center+ for Cardiac Care, we deliver on that commitment by continuously improving and investing in advanced technologies such as our hybrid operating room, which allows Guthrie to provide the latest in treatment options for even the most challenging cases.”
Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital’s hybrid operating room is a state-of-the-art operating room with real-time, high-resolution digital imaging capabilities allowing complex surgeries and studies to take place simultaneously with an integrated team of heart and valve specialists.
One of the advanced procedures now available in Guthrie’s hybrid operating room is Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). TAVR is a minimally invasive valve replacement surgery for patients with severe aortic stenosis who are not candidates for standard surgical procedures.
“Our goal with the Blue Distinction Centers+ for Specialty CareSM program is to identify local medical facilities that deliver higher overall quality and positive patient outcomes for a specific area of specialty care, such as cardiac care,” said Nina M. Taggart, MD, Vice President of Clinical Operations and Chief Medical Officer for BCNEPA.“This helps our members, and all local residents, make more informed healthcare decisions.”
Research confirms that the newly designated Blue Distinction Centers+SM demonstrate better quality and improved outcomes for patients, with lower rates of complications and readmissions than their peers. Blue Distinction Centers+ are also 20 percent more cost-efficient than non-Blue Distinction Center facilities.
Since 2006, consumers, medical providers and employers have relied on the Blue Distinction program to identify hospitals delivering quality care in Bariatric Surgery, Cardiac Care, Complex and Rare Cancers, Knee and Hip Replacements, Spine Surgery, and Transplants.
Guthrie Cardiac and Vascular Center’s commitment to continuous improvement is also evidenced by its success in exceeding the critical, life-saving time frame and national benchmark set forth by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association for D2D2B (door to door to balloon) time for patients with a serious heart attack involving blockage of the heart’s major arteries - when it is critical to reach a Cardiac Catheterization lab and/or to have the appropriate thrombolytic therapy to break up the clot. This life-saving process improvement is a result of a Lean Six Sigma project initiated by the Guthrie Cardiac and Vascular Center.
