Guthrie Launches Gastroenterology Fellowship

October 9, 2018

Guthrie is pleased to announce a new fellowship in gastroenterology (GI) at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa. The new fellowship has been accredited by The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and will begin in July 2019.

Dr. Michael Georgetson, Guthrie Gastroenterologist and GI Fellowship Program Director, said, “We are proud to offer a strong program of robust training to physicians who will be future leaders in the field of gastroenterology. The goal of this fellowship is to train clinicians who will strive for excellence, patient-centeredness and teamwork as they practice in this field.”

A fellowship is elective further training that a physician can receive in a specialty area of interest after completing a residency. Accreditation from ACGME demonstrates high quality of teaching, learning, research, and professional practice. Fellows will be provided with opportunities to develop clinical competence in gastroenterology, including exposure to hepatology, clinical nutrition, gastrointestinal oncology, radiology, and pathology. While this is a subspecialty program, training will emphasize functioning as a well-rounded clinician. Two fellows will be accepted to the program each year, and their training program will last for three years. Offering fellowships at Guthrie allows current Guthrie physicians to impact the future of practice in their area of expertise through training and mentoring. Residency and fellowship training can also help attract top physician talent.

The GI fellowship joins Guthrie medical education offerings alongside residencies in family medicine, internal medicine, general surgery and pharmacy and a fellowship in cardiology.
