Outpatient care in the Southern Tier took a major step forward on Thursday with the official opening of the Guthrie Broome Orthopedic and Spine Surgery Center.
Located at 400 W. Commons Way, Suite 100, at Oakdale Commons — and already affectionately known as “G-BOSS” — the purpose-built center is designed to make advanced orthopedic and spine care more convenient and more accessible, close to home. Nearly 50 community and healthcare leaders attended the opening of the new center, which has already completed 28 surgeries since its soft launch earlier this month.
“Today is not just about opening a new building; it’s about opening the door to the future of healthcare in Broome County,” said Dr. Edmund Sabanegh, President and CEO of The Guthrie Clinic. “With this center, we are bringing high-quality surgical care out of the inpatient hospital setting and closer to where patients want it: care that is safer, more efficient and more affordable.”
Built for specialized care
G-BOSS is the first facility in the Southern Tier dedicated exclusively to outpatient orthopedic and musculoskeletal surgical care, filling a gap in regional access. By moving procedures such as total joint replacements and spine surgery into a specialized outpatient setting, G-BOSS is helping patients avoid traveling to larger metro areas, including New York City or Pittsburgh, for this level of care.
The center is a first-of-its-kind partnership for Guthrie, bringing together local independent surgeons, Guthrie Lourdes Hospital and management partner Constitution Surgery Alliance. The facility includes four operating rooms and 17 private recovery bays, supported by advanced surgical technology.
Guthrie’s investment also supports the continuing transformation of Oakdale Commons. The project is expected to create more than 30 new professional roles and is part of New York state’s $18 million Empire State Development-supported revitalization effort to turn the former mall into a destination for healthcare, retail and childcare.
“Guthrie is absolutely committed to meeting this community’s health care needs,” said Kathy Connerton, president of Guthrie Lourdes Hospital. “As our population ages, it is our responsibility to evolve to meet the need for convenient, lower-cost care. This center is health care for our community, made possible by our community.”
A broader vision for care close to home
The opening adds to Guthrie’s growing presence at Oakdale Commons, alongside services including the Guthrie Johnson City Pavilion, retail pharmacy and fitness center — helping create a more seamless experience for patients from consultation to surgery to recovery.
Regional leaders joined Guthrie for tours of the center, including Broome County Executive Jason Garnar and representatives from the offices of Gov. Kathy Hochul, State Sen. Lea Webb and State Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo.
“Guthrie Broome Orthopedic and Spine Surgery Center at Oakdale Commons is an exciting addition to the healthcare opportunities available to our residents,” Senator Webb said.
“I am excited to have this state-of-the-art facility and am so grateful that our residents now have access to orthopedic and spine care close to home. This new center will undoubtedly contribute to a stronger, healthier future for the Southern Tier. I stand with our healthcare professionals and community leaders as we mark this important milestone for Johnson City and for all those who will benefit from this remarkable center in the years ahead.”
