Guthrie Expands ‘Game Plan: Careers in Sports Medicine’ to Three Locations for Summer 2026

.
Guthrie is bringing its popular "Game Plan: Careers in Sports Medicine" program to three regional locations this summer, giving high school students across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes an immersive look at the fast-paced world of sports healthcare.
Now in its second year, the full-day program features hands-on learning led by Guthrie healthcare professionals across several disciplines, including athletic training, strength and conditioning, physical therapy, sports nutrition, emergency medical services, and sports medicine/orthopedic surgery.
Sessions will be held at:
  • SUNY Broome Community College, Binghamton — Monday, June 29
  • SUNY Corning Community College — Friday, July 10
  • Tompkins Cortland Community College — Friday, July 17
All sessions run from 8 a.m. to 3:30 to 4 p.m., and are open to rising high school freshmen and older.
The program was created by Guthrie Athletic Trainer Zach Spencer, who recognized a growing interest among student-athletes in the professional side of the sidelines.
"Many students are interested in healthcare but aren't sure which path fits them best," Spencer said. "We created 'Game Plan' to highlight the diversity of sports medicine and give them the hands-on experience they need to make informed decisions about their future."
Students rotate through six interactive sessions taught by working professionals. Planned activities include American College of Surgeons "Stop the Bleed" certification and a live suturing demonstration.
"I hope students will leave with curiosity and a spark lit to ask questions and shadow more with other healthcare providers in their area," Spencer said.
The $50 registration fee covers breakfast, lunch, an event T-shirt and a one-week guest pass to either Lourdes Health and Fitness Center in Johnson City or Guthrie HealthWorks Wellness and Fitness Center in Painted Post (standard fitness center age restrictions apply)
Financial assistance is available for students who need help with the registration fee; please contact zachn.spencer@guthrie.org for details.
After a successful inaugural year that drew 40 students, the expansion reflects Guthrie's commitment to regional workforce development and community health education.
"The best way to learn is by doing," Spencer said. "This is an invitation to come out, get involved and see if you have what it takes to be the next sports medicine provider for Guthrie."
Registration closes Monday, June 1. To register or learn more, visit Guthrie.org/SMCareers26
