Guthrie Celebrates National Trauma Survivors Day, Honors Patient Resilience

In observance of National Trauma Survivors Day, Guthrie celebrated the strength of trauma survivors, their families, friends and the health care professionals who guide patients through recovery. The annual event, held Wednesday, May 21, in the Clinic Atrium at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital's Sayre campus, brought the community together to honor healing and share stories of triumph over adversity. A celebratory dinner was also held for trauma survivors and providers.
This year's celebration highlighted Guthrie's commitment to delivering high-quality trauma care throughout the region while addressing rural health care challenges. Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital — which earned Level 1 Trauma Center status in 2023 — serves as a vital resource for regional critical care. The hospital manages 1,800 to 2,000 trauma cases annually, with increasing complexity since its Level I verification.
National Trauma Survivors Day recognizes the resilience of survivors and their recovery journeys, said Dr. Steven Casos, Trauma Medical Director at Robert Packer Hospital.
"When we're done here today, many of us will go back and finish a shift, ready to provide care to the next trauma patient," said Dr. Casos. "But it's important that we never forget the work still being done by the patients no longer in our hospital beds — the ones who continue their journey of recovery, both physically and emotionally, outside our doors. Their strength gives us the strength we need to care for the next patient."
The Guthrie network provides comprehensive regional trauma care through multiple facilities: Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital as a Level I Trauma Center, Guthrie Corning Hospital as a Provisional Level III Adult Trauma Center, and Guthrie Troy Community Hospital as an accredited Level IV Trauma Center.
