Guthrie Awards Grant to Support Local Children
Guthrie's Community Benefit Program awarded $10,000 to Twin Tiers Baby Bank in support of its efforts to provide diapers and wipes to families with babies and toddlers in our community, with a focus on Steuben and Chemung counties.
Twin Tiers Baby Bank’s efforts support the physical health of local children and address the emotional and mental health challenges caused by living in need. According to the National Diaper Bank, half of children across the nation face diaper need, which is significantly linked to maternal stress and depression, as highlighted by the National Institutes of Health. Mental health was identified as one of the major health risks in Guthrie’s Community Health Needs Assessment and we are proud to support projects that promote mental health support.
Dr. J. Manuel Arreguin, System and Department Chair, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Guthrie, emphasized the critical role of Twin Tiers Baby Bank in addressing the challenges faced by families in maternity care deserts. Dr. Arreguin highlighted, "The support provided by Twin Tiers Baby Bank aligns with Guthrie's commitment to improving maternal and child health, especially in underserved areas like Steuben and Chemung counties. Access to essential supplies such as diapers and wipes is fundamental for the well-being of families in these communities."
This grant was awarded as part of Guthrie’s Community Benefit Grant Program, which funds projects based on Guthrie’s Community Health Needs Assessment. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), requires non-profit hospitals to complete a community needs assessment (CHNA) every three years. The following areas of need were identified for 2023-2025: mental health and substance use disorders, obesity, and cancer screening and prevention.
