Guthrie Cortland Medical Center caregivers came together Thursday, Jan. 15 to celebrate a prestigious national recognition for Robert Metcalf, Environmental Services Supervisor.
Robert is one of 10 nominees from across the nation to earn the C.A.P.E. (Cleaning to Advance the Patient Experience) Award from Cintas, a provider of facility services, uniforms, first aid and safety programs, and fire protection. Cintas received 1,650 nominations for the 2025 award.
The award recognizes EVS technicians at healthcare facilities “who are at the frontline of patient care, providing clean and safe facilities for healthcare workers, patients and visitors across the country.”

In its notification to the medical center, Cintas called Robert and his fellow EVS technicians “unsung heroes” whose dedication does not go unnoticed.
Cintas representatives visited Guthrie Cortland Medical Center Thursday to honor Robert and present him with the award, including a cape and a new cleaning cart with custom C.A.P.E. decals. He and the hospital also received plaques and cash awards.
During the celebration, infection preventionist Brandi Hardy, a member of the internal team that nominated Robert, said the medical center receives praise during regulatory surveys for its cleanliness, all thanks to Robert and his team.
“It is a true honor to work with Robert, knowing all the details will be handled professionally, calmly and efficiently,” Brandi said.
Robert has worked at Guthrie Cortland Medical Center for 22 years. He credits the entire EVS team for the quality work that the C.A.P.E. Award recognizes.
“I am grateful for who I have to rely on,” Robert said.
