Guthrie Safe Haven Program

A Safe, Legal, and Compassionate Option for Parents in Crisis
At Guthrie, we understand that life can sometimes feel overwhelming. If you are unable to care for your newborn, you are not alone. The Safe Haven Program provides a safe, legal, and confidential way to surrender your baby—no questions asked.

We are here to help you make the safest and most compassionate choice for your child.

What Is the Safe Haven Program?

The Safe Haven law allows a parent or caregiver to safely and anonymously surrender an unharmed infant without fear of legal consequences. This program is available in all Guthrie hospitals located in Pennsylvania and New York, in accordance with each state's Safe Haven legislation.

•    Pennsylvania: Babies may be surrendered up to 28 days old.
•    New York: Babies may be surrendered up to 30 days old.

Where Can I Bring My Baby?

You can bring your infant to the Emergency Department of any Guthrie hospital. These departments are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and are fully equipped to provide care.

Participating Locations:
•
Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital (Sayre, PA)
•    Guthrie Corning Hospital (Corning, NY)
•    Guthrie Cortland Medical Center (Cortland, NY)
•    Guthrie Lourdes Hospital (Binghamton, NY)
•    Guthrie Troy Community Hospital (Troy, PA)
•    Guthrie Towanda Memorial Hospital (Towanda, PA)

Upon arrival, simply hand your baby to a hospital staff member and let them know you are surrendering the child under the Safe Haven law. You are not required to provide your name or any personal information.

What Happens After I Surrender My Baby?

•    Your baby will receive a full medical evaluation and any necessary care.
•    The local county child welfare agency will take custody of the child.
•    The baby will be placed in a loving foster or pre-adoptive home.
•    After a legally required period, the process for permanent adoption will begin.

*This process is completely confidential and free of judgment*

Do I Need to Provide Any Information?

You are not obligated to provide any identifying information. However, if you are willing, you may share basic medical information about the baby or the birth. This can help ensure the child receives the best possible care.

You may ask hospital staff for a brief, anonymous medical form, or download it directly from the state’s Safe Haven website:
