Back Pain and Neck Pain

Back pain can occur in the upper back or lower back. A general term for pain in the lumbar spine or lower back is lumbago.

Back and neck can have many causes including:

  • Herniated disk – a condition where the soft center of a spinal disk pushes out through the hard exterior. Sometimes the herniation can press a nerve and result in pain, numbness or weakness in the arms or legs.
  • Sciatica - pain that radiates down the sciatic nerve that runs from the low back down the back of the leg. The condition can be caused by a herniated disk, bone spur on the spine or narrowing of the spine (spinal stenosis) that compresses part of the nerve.
  • Spinal trauma or fracture
  • Nerve damage

How are back pain and neck pain treated?

At Guthrie Spine Care Clinic, we study your muscles and nerves through special testing. This helps us pinpoint the cause of your back and neck pain. We create a treatment plan that is right for you. Treatment can include injection techniques, physical therapy, medication and, sometimes, surgery.

Our neurosurgery team is specially trained and board-certified. We use minimally invasive techniques for surgery. This means a faster and safer surgery with less recovery time including:

  • Smaller skin incisions
  • Reduced risk of muscle damage
  • Reduced risk of infection and pain after surgery
  • Less rehabilitation

Surgical treatment for spine pain or injury includes:

  • Vertebroplasty
  • Kyphoplasty
  • Spinal instrumentation/fusion

Back pain can also be treated with pain management, chiropractic care or physiatry.

Guthrie’s interventional pain management team is dedicated to improving patient quality of life by providing minimally invasive, non-surgical techniques and treatment options for those with chronic pain.
