Q: Why are back-to-school physicals and immunizations so important for children of all ages?
A: Back to school physicals are a great chance to make sure that your child’s growth and development are on track. It also gives you and your child a chance to ask questions about their health. Immunizations are important to keep them and their classmates healthy.
Q: Which immunizations are commonly required or recommended before students return to school?
A: The immunizations required depends on the grade. Most Pre-K and Kindergarteners will need Dtap, Polio, MMR and Varicella vaccines. For middles schoolers, Tdap is needed for 6th grade and Meningitis for 7th grade. Kids need a second meningitis vaccine before their senior year of high school.
Q: What should parents do if they're unsure whether their child is up to date on immunizations?
A: If you are unsure if your child is up to date on vaccines, please call your Guthrie pediatrician at 866-GUTHRIE (866-488-4743).
Q: What does a back-to-school physical include?
A: A back-to-school physical includes checking height, weight and vital signs. Depending on their grade, your child will have their vision and hearing checked. The provider will do a physical exam and answer any questions you or your child has.
Q: Beyond sports participation forms, how do annual physicals help support a child's overall health and development?
A: Annual physicals can help ensure that your child is growing appropriately. There are also unusual but concerning physical findings that we look for that you may not notice at home. One of these findings is scoliosis, which we check for in teenagers.
