Program Admission Requirements

Respiratory Therapy Program AdmissionsTo be considered for admission to this program, the applicant must have:

  • Submitted a completed application form and fee to the Admissions Office at Mansfield University
  • Submitted all high school and/or college transcripts
  • Completed at least 3 credits each of high school math and science courses
  • A grade point average of at least 2.7 in math and science courses, and a minimum grade point average of 2.7 overall

Mansfield University students wishing to change their major to respiratory therapy must meet the same academic criteria as other applicants. Transfer applicants from Corning Community College and Broome Community College will find a listing of courses accepted in transfer in the Program Catalog available at this web site.

In addition, prospective students are advised that, once admitted to the program, they must be able to:

  • Assist with lifting patients and perform other physically demanding tasks that involve bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, and pulling
  • Communicate effectively in written and oral English with patients and other health care providers
  • Use a stethoscope to assess breath sounds, hear normal levels of speech, and respond to audible and visual alarms
  • Manipulate and assemble small pieces of equipment and perform such tasks as needle puncture of an artery or placement of an artificial airway
  • Accurately measure medications, read patient records, evaluate information on patient monitors, and make and record observations of patients
  • Apply sufficient intellectual and emotional skills to make patient care decisions, and to respond quickly and effectively to medical emergencies
  • Work effectively with computers and sophisticated electronic and pneumatic equipment
  • Walk unassisted for hours at a time
  • Work with blood and other body fluids
  • Work with critically ill or injured patients of all ages
  • Work as a team member
  • Demonstrate compassion, dependability, and respect for others
  • Comply with all hospital and clinical affiliate policies and procedures
