Guthrie has an active clerkship and elective program for medical students from LCME-accredited institutions.
Third-year Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (GCSOM) students regularly rotate on the orthopedic surgery service at Guthrie, and fourth-year rotations are available. Fourth-year rotations are available both for students who are pursuing a career in orthopedic surgery, and for students seeking training in other specialties, who are looking to increase their knowledge of musculoskeletal care.
Rotating medical students at Guthrie have the opportunity to become an active member of our medical team, attending teaching rounds and conferences, taking patient histories, performing physical examinations, and assisting in the operating room or with other procedures. Guthrie’s clinical rotations and supportive learning environment enable third-year medical students with an opportunity to grow their medical knowledge through direct patient care experiences.
Guthrie uses the Epic electronic medical record (EMR) system, the most widely used EMR system in the U.S. Students at Guthrie will be trained on Epic, learning to use the system to view patient records, record patient details, and place orders as required.
We accept audition rotations from June through January. Students are scheduled in one-month blocks. We understand that students seeking to match in orthopedic surgery try to gain exposure to as many programs as possible, and we work hard to accommodate students who wish to visit Guthrie for a rotation.
