Guthrie has an active clerkship and elective program for medical students who are matriculated in an LCME accredited institution. Rotating medical students at Guthrie have the opportunity to become an active member of our medical team, attending teaching rounds and conferences, taking patient histories, performing physical examinations, and assisting in the operating room or with other procedures. Guthrie’s clinical rotations and supportive learning environment enable third year medical students with an opportunity to grow their medical knowledge through direct-patient care experiences.

Guthrie uses the EPIC electronic medical record (EMR) system, the most widely used EMR system in the US. Students at Guthrie will be trained on EPIC, learning to use the system to view patient records, record patient details, and place orders as required.

Guthrie offers third-year clerkships to our students in affiliated medical schools. Clerkships include family medicine, internal medicine, and surgery. Other electives are available upon request.

For fourth-year medical student clerkships, Guthrie utilizes the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) platform hosted by AAMC. To learn more please visit:

"I had a great time at Guthrie for my surgery rotation. The attendings and residents were excellent teachers and mentors. The staff was welcoming and very responsive to any questions or needs that we had. I feel fortunate to have had the exposure that I got during my time there. I'd highly recommend rotating at Guthrie for surgery!"

"Having rotated through a few hospitals, I can say that my experience at Guthrie has been wonderful. I never felt like a burden or was stuck being a passive observer - medical students definitely have a role in patient management. Besides helping to evaluate a patient, I can write notes in the EMR and can manage as many patients as I want. There's no scutwork, either. There is enough structure in the day to feel like I learn a lot but there is enough flexibility that I can brush up on procedures if I wanted. It's for those reasons that I recommend my fellow classmates rotate here if given the chance. Beyond that, I'd like to give a shout out to all of the hospital staff for lending their time and experience so freely."

"I had an excellent experience rotating at the Guthrie facilities in Surgery. The facilities are much newer and more up to date than any of the other hospitals in the surrounding areas, and the staff are very welcoming. With the small residency program and a limited number of students I was able to interact with attending physicians and learn about their personal styles both in clinic and in the operating room. The residents take an interest in teaching and allow students to carry their own patient load. Their EMR is very medical student friendly and made it very easy to gather all the information needed before rounds. The Skills Lab was always available and allowed me to practice suturing, chest tube placement, and laproscopic techniques. Perhaps one of the best parts of rotating there was how flexible they were with the schedule, they were willing to allow students to go into whichever case they felt they would get the most out of, were willing to adjust lecture times and always accommodated student needs."

“The clinical rotation experience that I obtained at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital during my third and fourth year of medical school has been invaluable to the foundation of my medical education and to the future of my medical career. Across all medical and surgical personnel, amid all levels of care and administration, Guthrie offers a warm welcoming environment that is conducive to learning and dedicated to teaching. In addition to providing optimal healthcare and exemplary patient services, collegiality and familiarity are key values displayed at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital. Not only are the residents and attendings invested in superior hands-on training, their affability, openness, and time commitment to students is demonstrated by the formation of long-lasting mentorships and loyal friendships among students and their seniors. After rotating here at Guthrie, I can confidently say that I feel well-prepared and ready to function as a proficient post-graduate intern next year.”
