Our People / Meet the Team

Welcome From the Program Director

Gregory Christiansen, DO, MEd, FACOEP-D

Since 1987, Guthrie has built a strong reputation for excellence in medical education and patient care. Its educational legacy dates back to 1923, when Dr. Guthrie partnered with the University of Pennsylvania to establish a Fellowship in Surgery. In collaboration with Dr. Charles W. Mayo of the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Guthrie helped pioneer the “Clinical Model,” a nonprofit, patient-centered system designed to meet the needs of the communities it serves—a model that continues to guide us today. The system success enticed Dr. Mayo’s son and grandson to train at Guthrie.

Today, Guthrie has grown into a comprehensive health system comprising five hospitals, 13 residency and fellowship programs, and a wide range of training opportunities for advanced practice providers, allied health professionals, nursing, and health sciences.

The Emergency Medicine residency program, accredited in 2019, has quickly established itself as a destination for residents seeking rigorous, hands-on training. The program is distinguished by a diverse and highly accomplished faculty committed to advancing your education and regional patient care. At Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital - a Level I Trauma Center and tertiary referral center - you will train in a high-acuity environment and experience cases aligned with your future practice. Guthrie - Corning Hospital provides valuable exposure to community-based emergency medicine, ensuring a well-rounded clinical experience.

Our program’s setting is one of its greatest strengths. Nestled in the Endless Mountains of Pennsylvania and the Finger Lakes region of New York, Guthrie offers a rare combination of a family friendly community environment with the clinical intensity of a major Level -1 Trauma & referral center. You will care for a diverse patient population across rural, suburban, and urban settings—developing the adaptability required for today’s emergency physician.

What truly distinguishes Guthrie graduates from the typical training program is the learned quiet confidence and independence of our graduates to handle any emergency. It’s a natural result of having a strong curriculum that can offer a focused educational

experience through our track program and still provide the depth of training to meet challenges of working in an independent practice environment. In our program, you are first to the patient whether you are an intern or senior resident; and you are not shielded from the complexity - you are prepared for it. Our curriculum is intentionally designed to ensure you graduate with the capability of handling any emergent condition. And when additional expertise is needed, you will have the support of 47 specialties from more than 350 physicians.

If you are looking for a residency that prioritizes hands-on experience, clinical breadth, and the development of true independence - supported by dedicated faculty and a collaborative culture - I invite you to explore what Guthrie has to offer. Here, you will be challenged, supported, and prepared for whatever path you choose in emergency medicine.

We look forward to meeting you and hope you will consider joining our team.
