Lead system-wide surgical services across a physician-led, multi-hospital health system in northern Pennsylvania and southern and central New York.

Highlights of the opportunity

  • Senior surgical leadership role for Guthrie’s six-hospital, multi-clinic system, accountable for the clinical, operational, academic, and strategic performance of surgical services across northern Pennsylvania and southern and central New York. 
  • Physician-led, non-profit, fully integrated health system with six hospitals, over 1,000 physicians and advanced practice providers, and more than two million patient visits annually. 
  • Lead a comprehensive, multi-specialty Department of Surgery including general surgery, trauma/acute care, minimally invasive/robotic surgery, surgical oncology, breast, bariatric, cardiothoracic, vascular, orthopedics', neurosurgery, ENT, urology, plastic surgery, and other subspecialties. 
  • Serve as System Surgical Chair and Chair of the Department of Surgery with enterprise-wide responsibility for surgical quality, access, growth, and patient experience across all Guthrie hospitals and ambulatory surgery settings.
  • Designated seat on the Provider Management Council (PMC), partnering closely with system executives, service line chairs, hospital presidents, CMO, COO, CNO, and other leaders on clinical and operational priorities. 
  • Lead perioperative strategy and operations, including OR access, block utilization, on-time starts, throughput, and case mix, in partnership with anesthesia, perioperative, and nursing leadership. 
  • Approximately 0.6 FTE administrative leadership and 0.4 FTE clinical practice within the candidate’s surgical specialty, modeling clinical excellence, professionalism, and commitment to teaching. 
  • Opportunity to grow General Surgery residency and other relevant GME programs, support high-quality teaching across the continuum of learners, and foster clinical research and quality improvement that elevate Guthrie’s regional and national reputation. 
  • Partner with Finance and service line leadership on surgical service line budgeting, capital planning (ORs, ASCs, robotics, and advanced technology), and data-driven performance management. 

Candidate Requirements 

  • Unwavering commitment to Guthrie’s mission and values, including improving health through clinical excellence and compassion—every patient, every time.
  • MD or DO from an accredited medical school. 
  • Board certification in a surgical discipline (e.g., General Surgery or a surgical subspecialty). 
  • Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in Pennsylvania and New York. 
  • Credentials supporting appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level (or equivalent academic standing) strongly preferred. 
  • Minimum five years of progressive leadership responsibility (e.g., Division Chief, Section Chief, Vice Chair, Program Director, Service Line Leader) in a hospital or health system of notable size and complexity. 
  • Demonstrated success leading multi-disciplinary surgical teams with measurable improvements in quality, access, growth, and/or financial performance. 
  • Experience in an integrated delivery system or multi-hospital environment strongly preferred. 
  • Track record of engagement in teaching and scholarly activity (education, clinical research, or quality improvement), ideally within an ACGME-accredited environment. 
  • Strategic, systems-thinking leader with deep understanding of perioperative operations (OR management, anesthesia collaboration, scheduling, throughput) and strong financial acumen. 
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence without authority, build trust across disciplines, and lead through change in a mission-driven, physician-led organization. 
  • Visible, approachable, and engaged leader who role models integrity, professionalism, accountability, humility, and a team-first mindset.
