Gastroenterology Fellowship Leadership

Program Director

Michael J. Georgetson, MD FACG is the Program Director for the Gastroenterology Fellowship at Guthrie/Robert Packer. Dr. Georgetson attended Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia and then 1985 came to Guthrie for his Residency, which continued to his GI fellowship until 1990 when Dr. Georgetson became an attending. In 2018 Dr. Georgetson became the PD for the fellowship. Dr. Georgetson has numerous years of teaching experience dating back to 1994. Outside of his teaching at Guthrie, Dr. Georgetson has shared his talents at SUNY Upstate Medical University Binghamton and Department of Clinical Sciences (Education) Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine Scranton, PA. Dr. Georgetson has pages of research and publications that he has written or contributed too. Dr. Georgetson’s interest are in the areas of GI Bleeding, GERD/Barrett’s Esophagus, GI Malignancy and Biliary/Hepatic Disease. The most important job Dr. Georgetson has is being a husband and dad and doing his favorite activities with them such as Flying, Photography, Fly Fishing, Downhill Skiing, and Amateur Radio.

Assistant Program Director

Matthew Lincoln, DO is the Assistant Program Director for the Gastroenterology fellowship program. Dr. Lincoln graduated from the University of New College of Osteopathic Medicine. He entered the military and did his residency at San Antonio Military Medical Center. He continued there for his fellowship and was a Major when he was discharged. Dr. Lincoln is very involved with research projects and has had many publications. Dr. Lincoln’s areas of interest are colonoscopy, therapeutic endoscopy, IBD, GERD and gastrointestinal bleeding. Dr. Lincoln has a wife who is also a doctor and specializes in wound care and hyperbaric medicine. They have 2 very active children and enjoy spending time at their lake house.

My career has been in the field of Human Services, specifically working with individuals with intellectual disabilities, elderly and traumatic brain injuries. After 25+ years I felt it was time for a change for my wellbeing and my family supported me in that. The last 2-3 years of my parents’ life (they passed in 2020), I spent a lot of time in Guthrie Corning as well as Guthrie Sayre because of their declining health. Every Guthrie employee I ever encountered was very caring, professional and worked as a team to provide my parents with the best care possible. I always thought to myself, “what a great group of people. I would love to work there.” When I made the decision to make a career change, I looked to Guthrie and was so excited when I was hired as the Program Coordinator for the GI and PCCM Fellowships. One of the best life choices I have made

What do I like to do in my free time? Family is the most important thing to me, so spending time together is my favorite pastime, especially with my grand babies. I also like to sew, cricut, paint, cook from scratch, bake and help other people. 

Fellowship Chiefs

Michelle Bernshteyn, MD is originally from Seaford, NY.  She completed a Bachelor of Science in integrative Neuroscience at Binghamton University, State University of New York and then attended medical school at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse.  Dr. Bernshteyn stayed at SUNY Upstate Medical University to complete internal medicine residency and serve as a chief for quality and patient safety at the Syracuse VA Medical Center before joining us at Guthrie for her gastroenterology fellowship.  Dr. Bernshteyn knew early on, in middle school, that she would pursue a career in gastroenterology to advocate for patients with gastrointestinal disease and moreover, stop cancer in its tracks with colonoscopies. This is because her uncle was diagnosed of stage 4 colorectal cancer and had a lasting impression on her. She hopes to ease the worries of patients who are hesitant to undergo this important screening test. She was recently awarded the “BOLD 10 under 10” award from the Binghamton University alumni association for achieving success in her field and being active in the community through mentorship and activism. When she has down time, you can find her trying out new restaurants, exercising (especially with Pilates classes), spending time with loved ones, binging great shows, and traveling. For part of her final year in fellowship, she will be planning her wedding on Long Island with her fiancé, Andrew.

Subash Ghimire, MD comes to use from his hometown of Bharatpur, Chitwan, Nepal.  He completed his undergrad school at St. Xavier's College, Kathmandu, Nepal and his med school at B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Nepal. Dr. Ghimire then traveled to the US to complete his residency here with us at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital.  Dr. Ghimire then stayed with Guthrie and worked as a hospitalist for a few years before deciding to complete his GI fellowship here. During his residency, he was impressed by the dedication, supportive nature, and good work life balance of my attendings. He was inspired by the thought process involved in patient care
