X-rays are the most common form of medical image. We can make X-ray pictures of many parts of the body for many different reasons. The most common X-ray picture is made of the chest when patients have health problems related to the heart or lungs. We also X-ray the bones most commonly for accidents and injuries. Although X-rays use radiation, most common X-ray pictures give very, very low doses of radiation to the patient. We have a strong commitment to radiation safety and a policy of using a radiation dose that is As Low as Reasonably Achievable (the ALARA promise). Guthrie uses digital X-ray technology, where the X-ray image is captured, stored and displayed by computer. All X-ray images are stored permanently in the patient's electronic medical record.
