Robotic Surgery for Prostate Cancer
A robotic radical prostatectomy surgically removes prostate cancer by removing the prostate gland and some of the surrounding tissue. A robotic radical prostatectomy is performed by a surgeon-guided robotic arm through small incisions in the stomach. Using robot-assistance creates finer, more precise actions than traditional open surgery.
In addition to the advantages to quicker recovery, safer and faster return to normal activity, robotic radical prostatectomy offers benefits to traditional open surgery including:
- More precise removal of the cancerous tissue. Twenty-six percent of patients who had a robotic radical prostatectomy had positive margins, exceeding the national benchmark of 17%.
- Faster return of penile function
- Less blood loss
- Increased chance of a return of urinary continence. At Guthrie, 97% of patients who underwent a robotic radical prostatectomy returned to continence within 12 months after surgery.
