Robotic Radical Nephrectomy

Minimally invasive surgery for kidney removal is the standard of care for removal of kidney cancer or for a kidney no longer functioning. This surgery is called radical nephrectomy. At Guthrie, we perform robotic radical nephrectomies when you have a cancerous or nonfunctioning kidney that must be removed without sparing the kidney. Our urology surgeons use small incisions to insert robotic instruments and a camera to perform the surgery and remove the kidney.

The benefits of robotic radical nephrectomy include:

  • Decreased trauma and scarring than with open surgery
  • Transfusion rates below national benchmarks
  • Easier dissection of the lymph node, which is often required when removing the kidney
  • Faster recovery time
