Guthrie is the only provider in the region offering Mohs surgery, an in-office procedure for fast, effective skin cancer removal. During this procedure, our fellowship-trained, mohs surgery specialist will remove cancerous skin tissue layer by layer. Once each layer is removed, the tissue is examined to determine if all cancerous cells are removed. This process is repeated until reaching positive margins, the complete removal of all cancerous tissue as indicated by non-cancerous tissue on all edges of the removed tissue. Mohs surgery can spare the greatest amount of healthy tissue and eliminate repeat visits for cancer removal.
Mohs surgery could be right for you if you have the following types of skin cancer:
- Basal cell carcinoma: the most common type of skin cancer, presents as shiny pearly nodules typically on the head or neck.
- Squamous cell carcinoma: uncontrolled multiplication of epidermis cells, beginning as small nodule and enlarging to become necrotic tissue.
Mohs surgery is the single most effective tool for the removal of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology Mohs surgery is 97-98% effective for primary basal cell carcinomas 95-96% effective for squamous cell carcinoma and 94% effective for recurrent basal cell carcinomas.
To find out if you are a candidate for Mohs surgery or if you detect any skin abnormalities, Guthrie offers skin cancer screenings in multiple locations:
