What is dementia?

Dementia is a decline in memory, language and problem-solving skills that interferes with your daily life. The most common form of dementia for people over age 65 is Alzheimer's disease.

Common signs of dementia include cognitive as well as psychological changes. Memory loss, on its own, is not necessarily a sign of dementia.

Cognitive:

  • Memory loss in conjunction with other cognitive changes
  • Confusion and feeling disoriented
  • Difficulty finding words or communicating
  • Difficulty with problem-solving/reasoning
  • Difficulty with complex tasks
  • Difficulty with visual and spatial abilities, such as getting lost while driving
  • Difficulty with coordination

Psychological:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Hallucinations
  • Agitation
  • Paranoia
  • Inappropriate behavior
  • Personality changes

Guthrie Memory Clinic

At Guthrie’s Memory Clinic, we help you find a diagnosis for the symptoms you are experiencing. To positively diagnose dementia or Alzheimer's, we perform detailed examinations of various brain faculties. We test for attention, memory, language, visual spatial ability and executive function of the brain.

Individuals diagnosed in the initial stages of dementia have more than a 50% chance of slowing the progression of the disease. We use a three-pronged therapeutic approach involving medication, supportive health care and social support. These are tailored to your needs with regular monitoring of your progress.

Guthrie neurology offers treatment options for Alzheimer’s, epilepsy, ALS, MS and other neurological diseases.
