What is a Functional Capacity Evaluation?
A functional capacity evaluation (FCE) measures an individual’s physical ability in relation to job or work functions. You may be asked to complete a functional capacity evaluation for the following reasons:
- Social Security and private insurance disability benefits
- Workers’ compensation
- Returning to work after illness or injury
The FCE tests an individual’s ability to:
- Lift and carry
- Climb stairs
- Achieve various physical positions and perform various activities relevant to job-related tasks
The evaluation is performed by an occupational therapist or physical therapist and typically takes 3-4 hours to complete over 1-2 days, depending on the information needed.
A doctor’s referral is required. Please ask your physician to include the medical diagnosis that warrants the evaluation along with the referral.
