Corning, N.Y. – State and city leaders and Guthrie system leaders broke ground on the future site of Guthrie Corning Hospital today.
“This project truly represents a new era in patient care for the residents of the region,” Hospital President Shirley Magana said. “We appreciate the trust that the people of Corning and Steuben County have placed in Guthrie, as together we watch this dream of a new hospital become a reality.”
The $146 million campus, located on a 67 acre tract of land adjacent to Interstate 86 in the Town of Corning, is only the second new hospital built in the state in 20 years. At 232,000 square feet and two stories high, the modern facility will feature 65 private rooms designed for patient comfort, privacy and safety. The new hospital has an environmentally friendly design to save energy and promote green operations.
Guthrie Health President and Chief Executive Officer Joseph Scopelliti, M.D. said, “This new hospital will meet the needs of the Corning community for generations to come. The new campus will be a modern showcase facility equipped to provide the highest quality inpatient care and outpatient services.”
When open in summer of 2014, patients will benefit from an integrated campus designed for efficient delivery of quality care and increased outpatient services. The Guthrie Cancer Center Corning location will be on the first floor of the new hospital with a separate entrance for patients. The campus will also include an efficient Emergency Department with 18 treatment areas and an on-site helipad to quickly facilitate trauma patients or transfers.
New York State Lt. Governor Robert J. Duffy attended the event which brought together officials from the town and city of Corning and Steuben County.
