Sayre, PA – Guthrie is pleased to announce the creation of the Dr. John M. and Mrs. Betty A. Thomas Endowment Fund that will support research and education at Guthrie.
The Dr. John M. and Mrs. Betty A. Thomas Endowment Fund, established with the Thomas’ generous gift of $1M, will be used to support research and scholarly activity of residents and fellows in graduate medical education training programs. Throughout his life and career, Dr. Thomas and his wife Betty have championed the cause of research and education as a path to an improved health care system.
“Guthrie is a regional treasure and the research and education conducted through the Guthrie Foundation is vital to improving the health care system and the health of the people in the surrounding community,” stated Dr. John M. Thomas. He added, “I hope the endowment fund we are creating will strengthen the research and education mission of Guthrie and I encourage others to contribute to this worthy cause.”
Dr. Thomas has strong ties to the Guthrie system, as he began his surgical internship at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in 1958. In 1968, he was elected to the Guthrie Clinic Board of Directors for the first time, and four years later he was named President of Guthrie Clinic. He was elected to that position 13 successive times and served as the organization’s leader for more than 18 years.
Recently, the Guthrie Clinic East Building was renamed the John M. Thomas, MD Building in honor and recognition of the life’s work and contributions of Dr. John M. Thomas.
