Guthrie Launches New Student Nurse Externship Program

November 21, 2018

Guthrie now offers externship opportunities for nursing students entering their senior year who wish to expand their clinical skills and knowledge.

The externship is a paid 10-week program designed to enhance nursing students’ clinical nursing and critical thinking skills. The program pairs educational events with rotations in clinical care areas.

Student nurses who participate in the externship program are eligible for continued employment during senior year of nursing school in the role of an Advanced Patient Care Technician. These students also receive early interview opportunities into the Newly Licensed Resident Nurse Program, a ten-and-a-half-month program designed to provide clinical experience, continuing education, and mentoring to help nurses transition from students to professional Registered Nurses.

In the midst of a national shortage of Registered Nurses, Guthrie is implementing these programs as part of a comprehensive plan to grow the complement of nursing team members across the system. Interested applicants may visit careers.guthrie.org.
