Chief Academic Officer (Sayre, PA)

The Chief Academic Officer (CAO) reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer of The Guthrie Healthcare System. This role includes oversight of academic programs and initiatives across the entire system, including graduate and undergraduate medical education, advanced practice provider education, and continuing medical education.


Key Responsibilities

  • Graduate Medical Education: Oversee GME programs to ensure alignment with ACGME standards and organizational goals.
  • Undergraduate Medical Education: Lead UME initiatives to foster a culture of interprofessional learning and collaboration.
  • Non-Medical Student Onboarding: Manage onboarding processes for nursing, allied health, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Advanced Practice Provider Education: Support the development and implementation of education programs for advanced practice providers.
  • Continuing Medical Education: Ensure CME offerings align with interprofessional learning objectives and support ongoing professional development.


Qualifications

  • Education: MD or DO, and Advanced degree in healthcare, education, or a related field. Terminal degree preferred.
  • Experience: Proven experience in academic leadership, interprofessional education, and healthcare administration.
  • Skills: Strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills. Ability to develop and implement strategic initiatives.
  • Commitment: Demonstrated commitment to improving healthcare outcomes through education and interprofessional collaboration.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Vision

  • Envision the Future of Interprofessional Learning: Lead the integration of interprofessional learning experiences (ILE) within the Guthrie Healthcare System, aligning with the organization's mission to improve patient care and population health outcomes.
  • Develop and Implement Strategic Goals: Collaborate with key stakeholders to create and execute a strategic plan for academic excellence, emphasizing interprofessional education (IPE), collaborative practice, and patient-centered care.
  • Advocate for Resources: Secure human, financial, and structural resources necessary to support interprofessional learning, educational infrastructure, and innovative teaching methods.


Academic Program Oversight

  • Oversight and Administration: Provide comprehensive oversight and administration of all academic programs, including graduate medical education (GME), undergraduate medical education (UME), advanced practice provider education, and continuing medical education (CME).
  • Compliance and Accreditation: Ensure all programs comply with relevant accreditation standards and maintain institutional records, reporting, and evaluation processes.
  • Curriculum Development: Foster the development and implementation of educational curricula that emphasize interprofessional competencies, teamwork, and collaborative practice.


Interprofessional Learning and Collaboration

  • Promote Interprofessional Education: Champion the integration of IPE into the curriculum, supporting faculty, staff, and student initiatives to create meaningful interprofessional learning opportunities.
  • Foster Partnerships: Build and sustain relationships with academic institutions, healthcare organizations, and community partners to facilitate interprofessional collaboration and shared learning experiences.
  • Monitor and Evaluate Outcomes: Develop and implement tools to measure the effectiveness of IPE initiatives, ensuring continuous improvement and alignment with institutional goals.


Faculty and Staff Development

  • Support Faculty Development: Provide leadership and support for faculty and staff in developing interprofessional learning capabilities, including training, mentorship, and professional growth opportunities.
  • Recognize and Reward Excellence: Establish mechanisms to acknowledge and reward faculty and staff contributions to interprofessional learning and collaborative practice.


Operational Management

  • Negotiate with Academic Leaders: Work collaboratively with college deans, program directors, and other academic leaders to ensure alignment of academic programs with interprofessional education goals.
  • Financial Stewardship: Develop and manage budgets to support innovative educational models, ensuring the efficient allocation of resources for IPE initiatives.
  • Personnel Management: Oversee the hiring, training, and evaluation of faculty and staff involved in interprofessional learning, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and academic standards.
