Research

The Donald Guthrie Foundation within Guthrie facilitates resident and fellow participation in research projects. Annually, the Donald Guthrie Foundation manages over 200 clinical trials which include sponsored trials from drug and device manufacturers, federally funded clinical trials and investigator-initiated trials. Fellows interested in designing an investigator-initiated research project are also eligible to receive up to $5,000 in grant funding from the Donald Guthrie Foundation to support their research.

All faculty at Guthrie have an active interest in clinical research and have published in major journals. Fellows are encouraged to participate in clinical research programs and to present their results at local and national meetings.

Clinical Skills Lab

Fellows will have access to the Guthrie’s Clinical Skills Lab, which is an area of approximately 4,200 square feet, divided into lecture and training areas to facilitate didactics and psychomotor skills practice.  State of the art audio-visual equipment, incorporating 80-inch smart board touch screen televisions with white board functions are in both halves of the lecture area.

Available simulation devices most applicable to pulmonary and critical care fellows include bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound guided biopsy, thoracentesis, central venous catheter placement, arterial line placement, echocardiography and endotracheal intubation.

Occasionally, human specimens are utilized for specific procedure practice as well.  Overall, the Clinical Skills Lab represents an investment of between $500,000 and $750,000 in equipment and simulators for the purpose of guided training prior to patient contact.

Facility

Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital is a sophisticated, regional, tertiary care center that receives many complex referrals. Its location in northeastern Pennsylvania is ideal for those interested in practicing in a rural setting, yet its status as an advanced care facility gives fellows access to an extraordinary range of cases.

The hospital also features a 38-bed intensive care unit with state-of-the-art technology and a patient and family-centered approach to healing from our multidisciplinary team of providers. Our intensive care unit includes an expanded unit featuring in-room monitoring systems, dedicated family area and pod-concept for specialized treatment of medical, surgical and cardiac patients.
