Residents work with a diverse team of physicians, nurse practitioners, psychologists and sub-specialists. Faculty members have completed faculty development fellowships at the University Of North Carolina School of Medicine, and each offers expertise in specialized areas, such as:

A Quality Program

The Guthrie Family Medicine Residency Program is a dually accredited osteopathic and allopathic program, and is fully accredited by the American Council on Graduate Medical Education. 

Guthrie is affiliated with the State University of New York, Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, N.Y., The Commonwealth Medical College, Scranton, Pa., and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Erie, Pa.

A Diverse Learning Environment

Family medicine training provides hands-on clinical experience at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital, a university-affiliated tertiary care teaching hospital with up-to-date equipment and technology. Residents spend their time focusing on learning and are supported by a team of ancillary personnel with full 24/7 laboratory, phlebotomy, and transportation services available for patients.

Guthrie also provides residents with opportunities to visit patients in nursing homes and make house calls, perform sports physicals in the local schools, participate in sports events, and contribute to health education programs. 

Designed with Residents’ Needs in Mind

Resident wellness is a top priority and is supported through Balint training in the doctor-patient relationship, resident-faculty mentors, and personal and professional development groups. The atmosphere is cooperative and supportive for all residents, including those in the Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Orthopaedic Surgery, and General Surgery programs.
