Benefits of weight loss surgery for at-risk patients
A new study confirms the benefits of weight loss surgery for at-risk patients.
According to a study performed by Kaiser Permanente, after five years:
- Gastric bypass patients lost an average of 22 percent of their initial body weight
- Sleeve gastrectomy patients lost an average of 16 percent of their initial body weight
- Only between 4 and 10 percent of patients regained weight to within 5 percent of their original weight
The study also showed that, after 10 years, people who had gastric bypass surgery maintained 20 percent weight loss, compared to 5 percent weight loss among those who lost weight through traditional medical care alone.
Additionally, those who achieve weight loss through surgery had half the risk of microvascular complications as those who attempted to lose weight using medical care alone.
