Guthrie Awards Grant to Support Mental Health Therapy for Local Students

Guthrie's Community Benefit Program has pledged a grant of $9,000 to Racker in support of their program aimed at providing Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) to students with severe emotional disabilities from traumatic stress within the TST BOCES and OCM BOCES educational programs.

Racker plans to utilize the funds for the training of program therapists. The initiative is specifically designed to benefit trauma-affected youth across Tompkins, Seneca, Tioga, Onondaga, Cortland, and Madison counties. The therapists from Racker serve educational programs that exclusively cater to students, the majority of whom come from low-income backgrounds, and are grappling with severe emotional disabilities stemming from Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).

Mental health was identified as one of the major health risks in Guthrie’s Community Health Needs Assessment and we are proud to support projects that promote mental health support.

This grant was awarded as part of Guthrie’s Community Benefit Grant Program, which funds projects based on Guthrie’s Community Health Needs Assessment. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), requires non-profit hospitals to complete a community needs assessment (CHNA) every three years. The following areas of need were identified for 2023-2025: mental health and substance use disorders, obesity, and cancer screening and prevention.
