First Impressions Birthing Center

The birth of a child is one of the most incredible events you will experience in your lifetime. The months leading up to that special day will be filled with joy, anticipation and planning. An important part of that preparation is choosing where you will deliver and who will provide assistance and support.

Single Room Maternity Care Unit
When that special day arrives, wouldn't you prefer to have your baby with all the comforts of home? Robert Packer Hospital's First Impressions Birthing Center makes this possible with spacious, home-like private birthing suites. You'll spend your entire stay in a single room throughout labor, delivery and recovery. This warm, relaxing
environment includes a walk-in shower, hardwood floors and large windows overlooking the surrounding hills. There's even a recliner for your spouse or support person and plenty of room for visiting guests - including a play area for the kids. Each room is designed to make you feel at home with the added security of a hospital setting. And to celebrate the birth of your new baby, you and your support person will be treated to a gourmet dinner.

Personalized Care Options
A complete team of expertly trained professionals are on staff to provide you and your new baby with the best care possible. During your stay, your care will be coordinated by highly educated and cross-trained registered nurses, aided by licensed practical nurses or nurse aides. For your primary care during labor and delivery, we encourage you to consider all of the personalized maternity care options available.

You may choose:

An Obstetrician: A medical doctor specially trained in prenatal care
and childbirth who handles the health care of women before and during
pregnancy. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call
1-888-4GUTHRIE (1-888-448-8474).

A Certified Nurse-Midwife: A health care professional, often with a nursing background, who cares for healthy pregnant women, with an emphasis on teaching, labor support and childbirthing options. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 1-888-4GUTHRIE (1-888-448-8474).

A Family Practitioner: A physician trained to handle all aspects of family care, including childbirth and care of mother and baby after birth. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 1-888-4GUTHRIE (1-888-448-8474).

We Deliver Quality Care
Each birthing experience is unique, which is why First Impressions offers a variety of specialty care features designed to meet your individualized needs. You will find that many of these services are not available elsewhere in the region.

Epidural on Request: Epidural anesthesia is available 24 hours a day for pain management or those patients undergoing a cesarean section delivery who wish to remain awake during the procedure. (Note: Under certain circumstances, such as time critical emergency cesareans, epidural anesthesia may not be available.)  Cesarean Births: If a cesarean section is requested or medically required, an obstetrician specially trained in this procedure is available around the clock. In many hospitals, only a general surgeon is on call to handle this need.

Newborn Care: A pediatrician, experienced in the care of newborns is on staff 24 hours a day.

High-Risk Newborns: Our Level II nursery is equipped to deliver high-level newborn care in time-critical situations.

Advanced Security System: Each newborn is fitted with a special bracelet for added security. If an attempt is made to remove a newborn from the birthing center, an alarm sounds as the baby nears an exit and the doors automatically lock.

Education is Essential

At Guthrie, we believe the childbirth experience begins the moment you become pregnant. From the very beginning, you'll have questions and concerns that may include what to expect during labor and delivery, how to breastfeed or how to deal with sibling relationships. In order to enhance the whole childbirth experience, we have developed a series of comprehensive classes that involve the entire family, including the father or other support people.

Our childbirth preparation classes are designed to cover every phase of maternity whether you're a first time parent or simply looking for a refresher. The "Early Bird Class" will help you get a healthy start on the first trimester when the critical stages of early development take place. "Childbirth Preparation," a five-week series, will provide you and your support person with valuable information about labor, breathing techniques, delivery options and your hospital stay. Other informative classes include Childbirth Preparation Refresher, Preparation for Cesarean Birth, Prenatal Breastfeeding, and Sibling Preparation.

Lactation Services: Guthrie offers lactation services for mothers who deliver their babies in Robert Packer Hospital's First Impressions Birthing Center, as well as mothers who deliver elsewhere and need the services of a lactation consultant.

Hearing Tests for Newborns: Guthrie offers hearing tests for all newborns.
