Guthrie’s Department of Behavioral Health

Robert Packer Hospital's Department of Behavioral Health Services offers an adult and adolescent program as well as an adult partial hospitalization program. Psychological testing is available as a part of a patient's evaluation. Patients have access to individual, group and family therapy, as well as medication evaluation and management. Services are provided in a centralized location in the Behavioral Health Facility, which is on Robert Packer Hospital's campus

Behavioral Health's multi-disciplinary treatment team includes psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, psychiatric social workers, case managers, activity therapists and registered nurses, all of whom work together through all levels of care. Consultation and liaison services are provided to medical and surgical units at Robert Packer Hospital.

Guthrie's Behavioral Health staff specialize in the following: General Adult Psychiatry, Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychopharmacology, Individual Psychotherapy, Group Psychotherapy, Marital, Family and Couples Counseling, Psychological Consultation, and Dialectic Behavioral Therapy.

The inpatient psychiatric unit offers state-of-the-art care for a variety of psychiatric conditions. A full assessment is offered, and a treatment plan crafted with each individual patient. Inpatient care offers the opportunity for evaluation of especially complex or difficult cases. It also helps to ensure safety for those struggling with major life issues.

How to Access Services

For general access to Behavioral Health Services, Monday-Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, please call 800-284-8670.

Patients who need immediate or emergent care should go to the Emergency Room at Robert Packer Hospital, where a mental health professional will provide a psychiatric evaluation.

Our Staff:

Charles McGurk, MD, Department Chair
Charles McGurk, MD, is the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry with Guthrie in Sayre. He earned his medical degree from Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, NE. He completed his psychiatry residency at Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia, PA. He is board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Jay Shah, MD
Jay Shah, MD, is a psychiatrist with Guthrie in Sayre. Dr. Shah earned his medical degree from NHL Municipal Medical College in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, and his doctorate in psychological medicine and his psychiatric degree from the KM School of PG Medicine and Research, also in Ahmedabad. He completed residencies in psychiatry at the KM School of PG Medicine and Research and at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. He is a member of the American Psychiatric Association and the Child Psychiatric Academy.
