Guthrie Clinic Recommendations for Breast Cancer Screening

  The Guthrie Clinic’s Cancer Program is certified by the American College of Surgeons and our mammography program is accredited by the American College of Radiology.   Based on our team’s multispecialty review of current medical knowledge, and  the recommendations from the  U.S. Preventive Services Task Force , the National Cancer Institute, the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Family Practice, the American Cancer Society and the American College of Radiology, Guthrie Clinic recommends:

  1. Any women with questions or concerns about the personal risks, benefits or timing of breast cancer screening should call us to consult with a breast cancer specialist.
  2. Asymptomatic, healthy women aged 40-70 should have a yearly mammogram. Even a woman with no family history of breast cancer requires screening.  We can assist you and your insurance company in paying for this important preventive health measure.
  3. Women with increased risk for breast cancer based on personal history of breast, ovarian, or colon cancer, previous chest radiation, genetic risk for breast cancer, a strong family history, or previous biopsy of a lesion associated with a higher rate of breast cancer will need earlier screening and may need other forms of screening besides mammography.  These women should determine a personalized screening program in consultation with our breast cancer specialists.
  4. Any women with symptoms related to the breast such as a palpable lump in the breast or axilla, a skin change or dimpling in the breast, acquired asymmetry of the breasts, a nipple discharge, or any other notable change in her breast should seek immediate evaluation by our breast cancer specialists.
